5 Ways Our Tutors Can Support CIPD Learners and Get a 100% Pass Rate

Introduction

Taking the leap to begin a CIPD qualification, whether it’s CIPD Level 3, Level 5, or Level 7 as a HR professional, can be very daunting.

Doubt creeps in because most learners won’t have studied for a formal qualification since they were in education, but don’t worry, it’s completely normal to start a CIPD course wondering, “Can I actually do this?”

Almost every new learner enrolling for a CIPD qualification will feel a sense of dread at the beginning of their course. At HRC Online, we acknowledge this and have built our entire support system around that reality.

Our specialist tutors and learning mentors aren’t just there to mark candidates’ work; they believe in providing the best support so learners build confidence from the very first assignment right up until their final module.

This dedicated approach is reflected in our 100% pass rate.

Read on to discover the five ways in which our team supports learners at every stage of their CIPD journey.

Way 1: Relearning How To Learn

Most learners at the start of their CIPD journey haven’t studied since they left education, which for some may have been years ago.

It’s important to remember that returning to structured education as an adult is not a personal failing; it’s something most professionals have to do to get better at their job.

Returning to learning can feel daunting, especially when trying to navigate working full-time while studying, but it’s not uncommon for HR professionals who want to excel in their roles.

Being more qualified, particularly in the field of HR, puts a person way ahead of others and can make them a better leader, a more effective team player, and, overall, better at their job.

Some of the biggest hurdles that new CIPD learners face when they re-enter education are rebuilding discipline, confidence, and study habits that fit adult life.

Our tutors and mentors recognise that it’s crucial to put support in place from day one so new candidates can navigate these challenges before they even dive into CIPD material.

In practice, this support can look like:

  • Not overloading the learner with content:

Effective mentors will set learners targeted reading tied to specific assessment questions. This prevents overload and keeps attention on the content that really matters for the task.

  • Helping the learner set micro-goals

Breaking down the course with weekly targets instead of presenting the whole 8-12-month qualification as one block helps retain focus and stop learners from getting overwhelmed. It makes the qualification feel more manageable and reassures the candidate.

This makes the qualification seem more manageable, which in turn reassures the candidate and reduces doubt.

Whether a learner is starting a CIPD Level 3, Level 5, or Level 7 qualification, the same phased approach applies from day one.

By starting at the beginning and implementing support systems like these from the get-go, learners will transform their mindset from “I can’t do this” to “I can do this”.

Way 2: Building a Study Plan Around Adult Life

Often, CIPD learners undertake their qualification whilst balancing adult life. For those also managing a full-time job alongside study, this can definitely be challenging.

A lot of learners start by asking, “How long does it take to complete a CIPD qualification?”, though in reality the answer is not always simple.

Instead, our CIPD mentors and tutors support candidates to plan their time realistically. This helps learners manage their qualifications around adult life more effectively, for example, with:

  1. Personalised Onboarding

The first onboarding meeting is the most crucial because it helps our mentors identify a learner’s academic standing. From this, they can understand what level of support is required from day one.

2. Work-Life Balance Mapping

All CIPD candidates have other commitments alongside their studies, whether that’s work, family, limited study space, or time constraints. Our tutors acknowledge this by helping learners build a plan that’s realistically tailored to their life, not a hypothetical average learner.

3. Pacing Goals

Rather than trying to tackle the whole syllabus in a matter of weeks, our tutors set pacing goals that help maintain structure, sustain momentum, and prevent study from becoming overwhelming.

This pacing approach is also built into how we structure both CIPD Level 5 and Level 7 study plans.

How long a CIPD qualification takes isn’t easy to quantify, as it depends on the individual learner and their circumstances. Our mentors and tutors realise this and offer personal support that is more effective for building confidence and achieving higher pass rates than generic guidance.

Way 3: Turning Setbacks Into Progress

The fear of failure is something every CIPD candidate experiences at some point in their learning journey.

If at some point in a learner’s studies they’re given a refer, it’s important to acknowledge that a refer isn’t a fail; what it means is that one specific question hasn’t quite hit the required standard yet.

The learner hasn’t failed the entire assignment or the course they’re enrolled on. If a learner refers to one question out of ten, they only rewrite that single question, and our tutors reassure candidates of this from the beginning.

When a candidate receives a referral on an assignment, our mentors encourage them to take a day to process the feedback emotionally, then book a session with their tutor to go through the notes collaboratively. This helps turn the referral into a clearer route forward.

From there, they help reestablish the learner’s confidence by building a solid roadmap and an action plan to put it into practice.

Even when faced with a referral for the first time, it can be tempting to give up, but with the right support and plan in place, this minor setback can become an opportunity for progress.

Way 4: The Feedback Most Providers Skip

Most CIPD training providers aren’t required to provide detailed feedback on every question in an assignment to learners, particularly for passing grades.

Whilst this isn’t a requirement for CIPD providers, our tutors understand that detailed, developmental feedback on every single question helps learners move from low passes to higher marks and progress more quickly.

In essence, this detailed feedback is not just a tick; it’s written guidance that helps strengthen an already good answer.

Where this matters most crucially is for learners progressing through CIPD Level 5 or advancing into a Level 7.

This deeper level of feedback is a deliberate choice made by HRC tutors and mentors to support candidates’ progress and success rates. It also strengthens capability, which is essential to developing strong, effective HR professionals.

Way 5: Integrated Flexibility For When Real Life Happens

At any given point, learners studying a CIPD qualification alongside work and life commitments may need to pause their studies. Key life events like weddings, new babies, work pressure, or health issues can affect studies, and this is very common.

Helping learners plan properly for when this happens is part of the support our mentors and tutors provide. It helps them stay prepared if studies need to pause.

For example, while the CIPD course is technically completable in around 8 months, we provide learners with a 24-month support window. In practice, this support window can look like:

  1. Access to materials

The extended window means learners can maintain access to all learning materials, whether in the form of videos, resources, or CIPD Bitesize content, throughout the full period, so support stays available if their pace changes.

2. Continuation of tutor and mentor support

Tutor and mentor support doesn’t stop at the 8-month mark; learners can still book sessions, ask questions, and get feedback throughout the full 24-month period, ensuring consistent support.

3. No added costs for extending the course duration

There are no additional payments required to extend or restart the course, and the 24-month completion offer is standard, so learners can focus on completing their qualification without added cost concerns.

4. Removal of course expiry anxiety

Having two years to complete the course reduces learners’ anxiety about falling behind schedule or having to rush their qualification, giving them more room to succeed at their own pace.

Some providers’ packages are structured around expected completion time, but we acknowledge that this can cause learners immense pressure, so our approach avoids this entirely. It also applies across all of our CIPD qualifications from Level 3 through to Level 5 and Level 7.

Finishing a CIPD qualification later than planned isn’t a personal failing or an individual falling behind; it can be the best way for the candidate to achieve the best possible outcome with the necessary support systems whilst balancing the challenges of adult life.

Ready to Take the First Step?

At HRC Online, our tutors are committed to encouraging learners to believe one thing: they can do it.

With tailored support introduced from day one, learners stop questioning, “Can I actually do this?” and instead develop the confidence and self-belief to complete their qualification to the best of their ability.

Often the hardest part of any CIPD qualification is at its beginning, and submitting the first assignment can be the most daunting moment of the whole course. It’s not the hardest piece of work, but it’s definitely the biggest leap of faith a person can take.

From that very first leap until the end of the qualification, HRC Online’s expert tutors and mentors are there to support you.

If you’re ready to find out what that support looks like in practise, explore our CIPD courses or get in touch.
