The CIPD Level 5 Associate Diploma in People Management is a regulated professional HR qualification awarded by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.
It develops the knowledge and professional behaviours needed to progress beyond administrative HR work into advisory, management and specialist people roles. The course covers organisational culture, evidence-based practice, employee relations, workforce planning, talent management, reward and workplace wellbeing.
What is CIPD Level 5 equivalent to?
The CIPD Level 5 Associate Diploma sits at Level 5 on the Regulated Qualifications Framework in England and Northern Ireland. It is commonly compared to the academic level of a foundation degree, Higher National Diploma or Diploma of Higher Education.
However, CIPD Level 5 is a professional HR qualification rather than a university degree. It sits above A-level and CIPD Level 3 study but below a full bachelor’s degree, which is Level 6.
Who is CIPD Level 5 for, and do I need to complete Level 3 first?
CIPD Level 5 is designed for people already working in HR or people management who want to develop their knowledge and progress into more responsible advisory, managerial or specialist roles.
You do not have to complete CIPD Level 3 first. You should normally have relevant HR or people-management experience, a Level 3 qualification, or other experience that has prepared you for intermediate-level study. HRC Online will help assess whether Level 5 is the appropriate starting point for you.
How long does CIPD Level 5 take to complete?
HRC Online study plans are designed around completing CIPD Level 5 in approximately eight to ten months with regular study. However, your completion time will depend on your experience, available study time and chosen payment plan.
The CIPD publishes a typical completion period of 12 – 16 months across all study centres and estimates the total qualification time at 420 hours. This includes learning activities, independent research, reading and assessment writing rather than compulsory classroom attendance.
Do I need CIPD membership to study?
YES! You must maintain active CIPD membership while studying so that HRC Online can submit your unit results to the CIPD and they can count towards your completed qualification.
After HRC Online registers you for the qualification, the CIPD will contact you with instructions for activating or confirming your membership. Any applicable CIPD joining and membership fees are paid separately to the CIPD.
Is the CIPD Level 5 course completely online, and when can I start?
Yes. The HRC Online CIPD Level 5 Associate Diploma in People Management is delivered entirely online, with no compulsory classroom sessions or scheduled group lessons.
There are no fixed terms or course intake dates, so you can start once your enrolment has been completed and study around your work and personal commitments. You can also explore the learning platform through a 14-day free study trial before choosing a payment plan.
Are there exams, and how is CIPD Level 5 assessed?
There are no traditional examinations with HRC Online. CIPD Level 5 People Management is assessed through written assignments covering each of the seven course units.
The assignments require you to research relevant evidence, evaluate different approaches and apply your knowledge to organisational and workplace situations. Assessments are submitted online, marked by HRC Online and subject to CIPD moderation. You will receive feedback explaining the outcome and any areas requiring further development.
How do CIPD Bitesize and Assessment-Focused Learning work?
CIPD Bitesize divides the course into manageable 10–15-minute learning activities. Assessment-Focused Learning connects those activities to the relevant CIPD assessment criteria, helping you understand what each question requires, what knowledge you need to demonstrate and where to begin your research.
What tutor support is included?
Every HRC Online payment plan includes unlimited one-to-one support. Sessions can be booked directly through our tutors’ online calendars whenever you need help understanding a question, structuring an answer, approaching your research or interpreting assessment feedback.
If an assessment requires further development, your feedback will identify the areas that need additional work. You can discuss this with a tutor before resubmitting, and HRC Online does not charge an additional fee for standard assessment resubmissions.
What will I receive when I complete CIPD Level 5?
After successfully completing all seven units, you will receive the CIPD Level 5 Associate Diploma in People Management. The qualification leads to CIPD Associate Membership and allows you to use the professional designation Assoc CIPD, provided you maintain the appropriate membership.
