Understand Your Command

STUDY TIP (4)

Answering the command verb is key to study success

One of the most significant errors we see when people are studying is missing the command verb, and in this example, you will see how one little word in a simple question can change the entire context of an answer.

In this example, we will focus on THE CARROT and apply different command verbs so you can see how it can change the answer’s focus. (I should have called this 50 shades of carrot)

Anyway, onto the examples

Define a carrot

A carrot is a root vegetable that belongs to the Apiaceae family. It is typically orange in colour and has a crisp texture. Carrots are known for their high levels of Vitamin A and are a great source of dietary fibre. They can be eaten raw or cooked and are used in many dishes. Carrots are commonly cultivated and easy to grow in a home garden. They are also known for their medicinal benefits.

Recommend a carrot

I recommend trying a carrot variety called “Nantes.” This type of carrot is known for its sweet and crisp taste, as well as its cylindrical shape, which makes it easy to peel and chop. They are also resistant to cracking and splitting, making them ideal for both fresh eating and cooking. Nantes carrots are also high in beta-carotene, which is converted to Vitamin A in the body and is good for eye health. They are also known to be easy to grow, making them a great option for home gardening.

Critically Evaluate a carrot

A carrot, while a nutritious and versatile vegetable, does have some limitations. One issue is that it is a heavy user of water and can deplete soil nutrients if not rotated with other crops. Commercial varieties of carrots are also often bred for their appearance and storage capabilities, rather than taste or nutritional content. Pesticides are also commonly used in their cultivation. From a culinary perspective, carrots can become mushy or lose flavour if overcooked. Overall, while carrots have many benefits, it is important to consider these limitations and take steps to mitigate them.

Describe a carrot

A carrot is a root vegetable, usually orange in colour, though purple, black, red, white, and yellow varieties also exist. It is a good source of vitamin A and has a crisp texture when fresh. It is often used in cooking and can be eaten raw as a snack.

Hopefully, you can see in this very carrot-obsessed answer that different command verbs require different answers, and it’s important, when studying for any exam or assessment, to understand the command you have been given before answering the question.

Telling me about the history of the carrot and how this carrot was eaten in this that and the other to show me how much you know about carrots is worth ZERO marks unless the command verb has asked for it.

Oh, and why did the carrot turn red?

Because it saw the salad dressing!
